New JMGS Editors

The MGSA is delighted to announce that Artemis Leontis will assume the position of Editor of the Journal of Modern Greek Studies beginning in January 2024 until January 2027. As a highly accomplished scholar, she has been elected to lead the JMGS for the next editorial term. We greatly appreciate her deep dedication to the field of Modern Greek studies and willingness, once again, to step forward to champion the scholarly mission of the MGSA.

Artemis Leontis, (Ph.D. The Ohio State University) is C.P. Cavafy Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature and Director of the Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan.  As Professor of Modern Greek, her area of specialization includes “the study of Greeks, the Greek language, migrations in and out of Greece by various ethnic groups, and the idea of Greece cultivated in the West in the modern period.” (For a fuller description and link to her Curriculum Vitae)

She is a highly experienced editor having served as Editor of Arts & Humanities for the JMGS from 2013-2016 and reelected until 2019. Before that, she served for many years on the Editorial Board, and as Associate Editor.  As an accomplished scholar and teacher, she has published numerous books, edited volumes, and articles, including Eva Palmer Sikelianos: A Life in Ruins (Princeton, 2019), and has mentored many graduate students in the field. Directing a vibrant and innovative Modern Greek Program, she has raised the profile of Modern Greek studies not only in her university but throughout North America and Europe. Her service to the profession and particularly to the MGSA is significant as she has continuously served since 1994 as either a member or chair of almost every MGSA committee.

We are also pleased to announce that joining the editorial team as Associate Editor is Georgios Giannakopoulos (Ph.D., Queen Mary University of London), Lecturer in Modern History at City University of London and Visiting Research Fellow in the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s College, London. He is a historian of modern Europe specializing in modern Greece and Southeastern Europe and has extensive editorial experience serving on the Editorial Board of History, as well as with the H-Diplo (H-Net) web platform. Finally, we are grateful to Michael Herzfeld who stepped in this past year as editor and kept the Journal’s high standards going as we completed this 2023 editorial search.  He will be overseeing the publication of the May 2024 issue. We thank him for his excellent service and wish him well in the future.
